One of the nicest features of a luxury motorhome or any RV is that it allows you to take along your trusty companion on your travels. Your dog is your best friend and your beloved companion and finding someone to watch her or having to board her can be challenging and expensive and even distressing for your pet if you’re gone for a long time. So why not bring her along on your next RV vacation?

Independence RV in Winter Garden is your Florida luxury motorhome dealer. Below, you’ll find some helpful tips to make traveling with your dog easy and enjoyable for you both.

Keep Your Dog Leashed

It might be tempting to let Butch roam free when you pull over to a park or rest area, but this is a really bad idea. While your dog may be the most loving and gentle soul, you can’t guarantee that he won’t be scared by other dogs or that other dogs won’t be more aggressive. Keep your dog on a leash when he’s outside of your RV, especially at rest stops where he might run off into the woods suddenly.

Provide a Secure Crate

When traveling with your dog, you should make sure to keep her in a secure crate while the vehicle is in motion. A dog that’s allowed to roam freely throughout the motorhome is a danger to herself and to you and your fellow human passengers. You never know what she could get into or what might suddenly frighten her and cause her to race around, trying to hide. Crating your dog is the most humane way to travel with her.

Take More Breaks

You also know that your dog won’t take kindly to being crated for hours at a time. Make sure that you add in breaks to your travel time every hour or 90 minutes so that you can pull over at a rest stop and take Spot out to relieve himself, walk around, drink some water and get some good sniffs of the interesting air in before it’s time to travel again.

Maintain Routines

Travel can be quite disruptive to our daily routines, which is jarring enough if you’re a person, but incredibly disorienting if you’re a dog! Try to stick with your usual routines as much as possible: feed your dog at the same time every day (be mindful that time zone changes may impact when this should be), take him on walks as you usually do and make sure that he has time and space to relax when he usually naps. Your dog will be much less anxious if he gets everything that he’s accustomed to at the right times.

Pack Sufficient Supplies

When you’re out in the wilderness or traveling in rural areas far from home, it’s going to be very challenging to locate your dog’s exact food or medication if you happen to run out. And every pet owner knows how disastrous a sudden diet change can be, which is definitely not something you want to deal with on the road. Therefore, always pack extra food and medicine (if your dog takes any regular medications or needs topical treatments) to ensure that Fido is fed just as he’s used to.
